gddami ڭدّامي
Moroccan Darija · preposition
“gddami” (ڭدّامي) is a preposition in Moroccan Darija meaning in front of me.
Meanings
- in front of me
- in my presence, before my eyes
Usage
Gddami is the preposition gddam ("in front of") followed by the first-person suffix -i. It is therefore not a standalone word but an inflected form, like gddamek (in front of you) or gddamu (in front of him). It is used in the spatial sense ("he stopped gddami") and in the sense of "before my eyes", for a direct witness: "dar-ha gddami". In the expression "fin tban gddami ?", literally "where do you appear in front of me?", the speaker is saying the other person can't hold a candle to them. Not to be confused with mor-i (behind me). The spelling with g marks the hard "g" sound, which corresponds to the q of Standard Arabic.
Example
كولشي كحال ڭدامي
kolchi k7al gdami
“Everything went dark in front of me.”
