Usage

La9ab is a word of Standard Arabic origin, very common in the language of football and sport: rbe7 l-la9ab "to win the title", l-la9ab l-ifri9i "the African title". It also refers to an honorific title or a nickname given to someone. For a casual nickname, smiya or ki 3iytou lih ("what they call him") is more common. For the family name, Moroccan administrative usage tends to say l-ism l-3a'ili, and everyday language says kniya. La9ab therefore does not correspond exactly to "surname".
