Moroccan Darija · adjective

“mdroub” (مضروب) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning multiplied by (arithmetic).

Meanings

  1. multiplied by (arithmetic)
  2. hit, beaten

Usage

Mdroub is the passive participle of the verb drab, "to hit". In arithmetic it is used for multiplication, followed by the preposition f: juj mdroub f tlata, "two times three". This is the formula recited at school when learning the times tables. In its literal sense it describes a person or object that has been hit or struck: mdroub b-ḥajra, "hit by a stone". The feminine is mdrouba. An English speaker should remember that in arithmetic one says f and not b.
