Tunisian Derja · adjective

“madhroub” (مضروب) is an adjective in Tunisian Derja meaning hit, beaten.

Meanings

  1. hit, beaten
  2. times (multiplication)
  3. counterfeit, adulterated

Usage

Madhroub is the passive participle of dhrab (to hit). It first describes a person or thing that has received a blow. In arithmetic, it is used to say "times": tlata madhroub fi arb'a (three times four). Applied to goods (cigarettes, alcohol, coins), it means they are fake or adulterated. In the construction madhroub aliha or madhroub fiha, it means smitten, crazy about her; this sense is colloquial. Context resolves the ambiguity. The feminine is madhrouba.
