mout موت

Moroccan Darija · noun

“mout” (موت) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning death.

Meanings

  1. death
  2. passing (of someone)

Usage

Mout means death in general, as a concept. It also means the death of a specific person, with a complement: mout lwalida, "the death of the mother". It appears in many resigned or religious formulas, for example koulna ghadi nmoutou, "we will all die". Note: the same written form can be read as the verb "to die" in the imperfect (nmout, "I die", ymout, "he dies"). Context tells them apart. To talk about a way of dying, mouta is used instead. The word belongs to all registers.
