Usage

Program is a borrowing from French, integrated into darija and very common. It is masculine: had l-program, chi program. It first means a plan of activities, what one intends to do: ach kayn f l-program lyoum? ("what's on the program today?"). One also says dir chi program for "organize something" with friends. It is used for a television show and, among young people, for a piece of software. The most commonly heard plural is programat. In a more formal register, especially on television, you also hear barnamaj, the Standard Arabic word.
