sawwet صوّت
Moroccan Darija · verb
“sawwet” (صوّت) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to vote, cast one's vote.
Meanings
- to vote, cast one's vote
- to vote for someone
Usage
Sawwet means "to vote", especially in elections, a referendum or an online poll. The person or party chosen is introduced by 3la: sawwet 3la… "to vote for…". The word is common in speech as well as in the media. Pitfall: the unvowelled spelling is the same as the noun sout or sowt, "voice, sound, noise", very frequent in phrases like msha liya sout, "I lost my voice". Only the doubled consonant distinguishes the verb sawwet. The derived noun tasswit, "voting", belongs more to the journalistic register.
Example
واش غادي تصوّت هاد العام؟
wach ghadi tsawwet had l3am?
“Are you going to vote this year?”
