“sout” (صوت) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning voice.

Meanings

  1. voice
  2. sound, noise

Usage

Sout refers to a person's voice and, more broadly, to any sound or noise: sout el karhba, "the noise of the car". Figuratively, it is used as in English: wassel soutou, "to make one's voice heard". In an electoral context, sout is a vote, and the derived verb sawwet means "to vote": sawwet 3la, "to vote for". To ask someone to speak more quietly, you say habbet soutek. The plural aswat belongs mainly to the media register.
