ta3 تاع

Moroccan Darija · preposition

“ta3” (تاع) is a preposition in Moroccan Darija meaning of (belonging, possession).

Meanings

  1. of (belonging, possession)
  2. belonging to

Usage

Ta3, sometimes nta3, marks belonging or the relationship between two nouns: "the book of", "the one of". It is a regional form. It is heard mainly in the Oriental region (Oujda and its surroundings), whereas most Moroccans say dyal in the same use. It takes suffix pronouns: ta3i ("mine"), ta3ek ("yours"), ta3o ("his"). A speaker from another region will understand it, but it immediately sounds "eastern". For a learner aiming at a general dialect, dyal remains the safest choice.
