te7t تحت

Moroccan Darija · preposition

“te7t” (تحت) is a preposition in Moroccan Darija meaning under, beneath.

Meanings

  1. under, beneath
  2. the bottom, the lower part
  3. downstairs, below

Usage

Te7t is the basic preposition for "under": te7t ṭṭebla ("under the table"). Preceded by the article, lte7t becomes a noun or an adverb: "the bottom" or "downstairs" (hbeṭ lte7t, "go down"). With a pronoun, you say te7tu, te7tha ("under him, under her"). It is found in figurative expressions such as te7t ṭṭebla ("under the table, on the sly"). There is a pitfall in writing: the spelling ta7t also corresponds to ṭa7t, "she fell" (from the verb ṭa7), and ṭa7t liya means "I lost". Only context can settle it.
