Meanings
- pupil, schoolchild
- student
- exam candidate
Usage
The word tlmid mainly refers to a pupil in primary school, middle school or high school. For a university student, talib or étudiant is more usual. The feminine is tlmida, the plural tlamid. This spelling with d reflects the common Moroccan pronunciation of the word, which is also written with dh in the manner of Standard Arabic. It appears in expressions such as tlmid mjtahid (diligent pupil) or tlmid f l'ibtida'i (primary school pupil). The pitfall is using it for an adult in training, since the term evokes school first and foremost.
