tye7 طيّح

Moroccan Darija · verb

“tye7” (طيّح) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to make fall, drop.

Meanings

  1. to make fall, drop
  2. to drop, lose along the way
  3. to make fail, flunk

Usage

Tyye7, with the doubled consonant, is the transitive form of ta7 (to fall): tyye7 l-kas, "to drop the glass". It is also used for an object lost along the way and, colloquially, for someone you cause to fail or fall, for example in an exam. Pitfall: sentences about rain (yti7 chta, "it's going to rain") use the simple, intransitive verb ta7 / yti7, not tyye7. You need to distinguish clearly between ti7 (to fall) and tyye7 (to make fall), which Latin-letter spelling often blurs together.

Example

طيّح التيليفون ديالو فالأرض

tyye7 ttilifoun dyalo fl2ard

“He dropped his phone on the floor.”
