7sed حسد
Tunisian Derja · noun
“7sed” (حسد) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning envy, jealousy.
Meanings
- envy, jealousy
- evil eye caused by envy
Usage
El 7sed is malicious envy of what someone else has. In Tunisia, the notion is closely tied to the evil eye (el 3in): people sometimes hide good news for fear of 7sed, and readily add "rabbi yo7fodh" or "tbarkallah" after a compliment. The corresponding verb is 7sed / ya7sed ("to envy"), with 3la for the object of the envy: ya7sdouk 3la flousek, "they envy you your money". An envious person is 7assed, plural 7assdin. For an English speaker, the word is stronger than "jealousy" in the romantic sense, which is more often expressed with ghira.
Example
الحسد موجود، ربي يحفظنا
el 7sed mawjoud, rabbi yo7fodhna
“Envy exists, may God protect us.”
