jemla جملة
Tunisian Derja · adverb
“jemla” (جملة) is an adverb in Tunisian Derja meaning not at all (with negation).
Meanings
- not at all (with negation)
- completely, totally
- sentence (grammar)
Usage
Jemla is mainly used as an intensifying adverb, placed at the end of the sentence. With a negation, it reinforces the refusal or absence: ma na3rfouch jemla, "I don't know him at all". Without a negation, it means "completely": gharib jemla, "completely foreign". The expression bel-jomla means "roughly, in general", notably wholesale in commerce. The sense of "sentence" comes from school and Standard Arabic; it is then pronounced more like jomla. Note: jemla does not mean "together" in the sense of "gathered".
Example
ما نعرفوش جملة
ma na3rfouch jemla
“I don't know him at all.”
