jeneb جانب

Tunisian Derja · noun

“jeneb” (جانب) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning aspect, side of an issue.

Meanings

  1. aspect, side of an issue
  2. side, flank

Usage

Jéneb, in the sense of "aspect" or "dimension" of a subject, belongs to a rather formal register. It is heard in debates, the media and serious discussions: el jéneb ennafsi, "the psychological aspect", min jéneb ekhor, "on the other hand". In casual conversation, the idea of "next to" is rendered instead by b jnab or 7dha. This is a trap for learners: jéneb is not the preposition "next to".

Example

لازم نشوفو الجانب المادّي زادة.

lezem nchoufou el jéneb el maddi zeda.

“We have to consider the financial aspect too.”
