kharej خارج

Algerian Darja · preposition

“kharej” (خارج) is a preposition in Algerian Darja meaning outside of, beyond.

Meanings

  1. outside of, beyond
  2. abroad (with the article)
  3. going out, leaving

Usage

Kharej is used mainly as a preposition: "kharej la wilaya", "kharej el wa9t" (past the deadline). With the article, l-kharij or l-kharej means abroad: "rah fel kharij" means "he is abroad". This sense is very common in conversations about emigration. The same word is also the participle of the verb khrej (to go out): "rani kharej" means "I am going out", and it agrees in gender and number (kharja, kharjin). Fixed phrases from Standard Arabic such as "kharej taghtiya" (out of network coverage) are borrowed as they are, often ironically. Context tells you whether it means "outside" or "I'm going out".

خويا يخدم في الخارج من عشر سنين.
