kharj خارج

Moroccan Darija · adjective

“kharj” (خارج) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning going out, on the way out.

Meanings

  1. going out, on the way out
  2. out (hanging out)
  3. outside, away from

Usage

Kharej is the active participle of khrej, "to go out". It indicates that one is in the process of going out or is out: ana kharej db ("I'm heading out now"), kharej m3a s7abi ("I'm out with my friends"). The feminine is kharja and the plural kharjin. The expression dakhel kharej m3ah means "always hanging around with him". To say "outside" as an adverb, darija prefers berra. Lkharij means abroad, in the sense of other countries: khdam f lkharij ("he works abroad"). Remember that kharej first describes an action in progress, not a place.
