Meanings

Usage

A word of Standard Arabic origin, but in completely common use in Algerian speech. It is used as an adjective ("hadi mosta7il", it's impossible) and above all as an adverb of categorical refusal before a verb: "mosta7il nroh" (I'll never go). Alone, as an answer, it is equivalent to "no way!" or "out of the question!". It is invariable in spoken usage and does not agree with the subject. It is also used to express disbelief: "mosta7il!" (that's not possible!). Neutral register, understood by everyone, in speech as well as in writing on social media.
