mowwel موّل

Moroccan Darija · verb

“mowwel” (موّل) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to finance, to fund.

Meanings

  1. to finance, to fund

Usage

Mowwel means "to finance". This verb comes from Standard Arabic and is used in a rather formal or technical register: projects, associations, banks. The corresponding noun is tamwil, financing. It takes a direct object: "mowwel lmachrou3". Important pitfall: without the doubled consonant, the word moul is something else entirely. It is a very common noun meaning "owner, the one who has or holds": moul lhanout (the grocer), moul ddar (the master of the house). Most sentences found online actually contain this moul, not the verb mowwel.

Example

شكون اللي موّل هاد المشروع؟

chkoun lli mowwel had lmachrou3?

“Who financed this project?”
